S355JR/S355J0/S355J2 Steel Plate

  • Home >>

S355JR, S355J0 and S355J2 steel plates are non-alloy structural steels specified under EN 10025-2 for hot-rolled structural products used in welded, bolted and riveted construction. The S355 designation identifies the structural steel strength class, with a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa for nominal thicknesses up to 16 mm; the specified minimum yield strength decreases as plate thickness increases.

The main difference between S355JR, S355J0 and S355J2 is their specified Charpy V-notch impact toughness: JR requires 27 J at +20°C, J0 requires 27 J at 0°C, and J2 requires 27 J at −20°C. These impact-quality designations, together with plate thickness, delivery condition, welding requirements and project specifications, determine the appropriate S355 grade for structural fabrication such as building frames, bridges, supports and other load-bearing steel components.

EN10025 European Standard Structural Steel

EN 10025 is the European standard structural steel for Hot rolled products in carbon steel. S355 grade is also defined in this standard, other than this grade there are also S235, S275, S460, S550, S620, S690 with conditions hot rolled, normalized, quenched, and tempered.

FAQ

Q1: Does S355 steel always have a 355 MPa minimum yield strength?
A1: No. Under EN 10025-2, 355 MPa is the specified minimum yield strength for thicknesses up to 16 mm. The minimum yield strength decreases as plate thickness increases, so thickness must be considered when checking structural design values.

Q2: Does the −20°C Charpy test for S355J2 mean a −20°C minimum service temperature?
A2: No. −20°C is the specified Charpy V-notch test temperature, not automatically the minimum design or service temperature. Material suitability must also consider section thickness, stress level, detail category and the applicable structural design specification.

Q3: Is S355JR equivalent to ASTM A572 Grade 50?
A3: Not as a direct one-to-one substitute. Both are structural steels with similar strength ranges in some thicknesses, but their chemistry, impact requirements, thickness-dependent properties and acceptance rules come from different standards. Substitution requires confirmation against the project specification and design requirements.

Q4: What is the difference between S355J2 and S355J2+N?
A4: S355J2 identifies the strength and impact-toughness quality, while +N identifies the normalized or normalized-rolled delivery condition. The +N suffix therefore describes how the steel is supplied, not a different Charpy quality grade.
